Yes, I’m a self-proclaimed film geek. As you’ve been reading in other posts, this field is extremely hard work. We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love it, and love it in a crazy, goofy way that can only be described as geekiness.

Documentary filmmaking is mostly about relationships. You build a rapport with the people you want to film so they will show you a window into their lives. Being a woman in the industry definitely has its benefits but just being a woman won’t cut it.

The producer is the one who has to say yes as often as possible, no as rarely as possible, and has to keep the production rolling forward at all costs, whether there is a blizzard or not.

I felt and was treated like a respected colleague among friends that varied from first-film-struggling-artists to seasoned veterans making a living off their personal work. It was fun and inspiring to hear how other people got started in the industry and to realize that most are going through the same struggles.

A group calling themselves the Chicken Underground were banding together to get the local ordinances changed to allow for the legalization of backyard poultry. My chicken book idea came back into focus, but I began to think of it in a more dynamic way–as a film.

For many, decisions on what to eat are not so complex; often they revolve around questions of “what’s left in my cupboard?” I envision a future of eaters looking to their community gardens, grow houses, and market baskets to decide “what to eat.”
